Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Microbiologist 1 position for the Microbiology department at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position supports microbiology laboratory courses. The incumbent will prepare reagents and materials needed for laboratory courses that involve the growth of bacteria, parasites, viruses, and tissue culture cells. Additional duties include ordering and inventory maintenance of supplies. The position also involves cleaning and sterilizing glassware and other items after laboratory classes. The person will interact daily with faculty, staff, and students.

The Department of Microbiology, staffed by about 20 faculty and three instructors, trains about one thousand undergraduate majors and 35 graduate students. Research interests encompass studies on the biology and pathogenesis of viruses and bacteria, microbial ecology and evolution, and environmental microbiology. Position Duties
65% Efficient operation of the microbiology media laboratory, which is responsible for the mass production of all types of growth media and solutions used in undergraduate teaching laboratories.

Aseptically prepare large quantities of petri plates, agar/broth culture tubes, and chemical solutions, as required and regardless of unexpected events.

Timely consultation with teaching faculty regarding the preparation of media and materials for courses.

Order and maintain the inventory of disposable supplies, small equipment, growth media, and chemicals needed for teaching purposes on a quarterly basis.

Supervision of student workers who sterilize and wash used glassware from the teaching labs and media prep lab during the academic year.

Autoclaving of lab biohazardous waste, collecting and disposing of all hazardous waste according to OSU Environmental Health and Safety requirements.

Maintenance of bacterial and chemical inventories.

Development of yearly-updated chemical hygiene plans in accordance with OSU Environmental Health and Safety requirements.

25% Lyophilization of bacterial cultures for the teaching program and departmental research laboratories, on request. This will include culturing of BLS1 and BSL2 pathogens, gram staining and the use of biological tests to ensure purity. An understanding and the practice of safety requirements associated with these pathogenic organisms is required.

Instruct Graduate Assistants on how to use specialized equipment (e.g., Flow cytometer, Elisa readers, gels boxes and thermal cyclers).

5% Maintenance of up-to-date personnel safety records, and following required safety regulations for use and maintenance of relevant autoclaves and eye wash stations.

Special projects as warranted.

5% Clean and sterilize glassware during the summer term when undergraduate student workers are not available.

Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree with advanced courses in Bacteriology, Chemistry, and/or other biological fields which shows knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related field, to include advanced courses in Bacteriology, Chemistry, and/or other biological fields

Demonstrated knowledge of microbiology theories, principles, and practices, as well as familiarity with laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments OR an equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience working full-time in a media prep laboratory for a university laboratory teaching program, or equivalent setting where strong organizational skills and experience meeting outside deadlines are required.

Experience working aseptically.

Demonstrated ability to store (e.g., lyophilization) and maintain pure microbial culture stocks free of contamination after repeated culturing.

Experience using chemical molecular weights, equations to make accurate calculations.

Experience handling small animals for use in a laboratory environment.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Three years of experience in preparing media and solutions on a large scale.

Experience ordering supplies and interacting with company representatives.

Experience with molecular biology methods (e.g., PCR, gel electrophoresis, etc.).

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Potential exposure to BSL-1 and BSL-2 pathogenic organisms and hazardous chemicals. Routine use of autoclaves (possible steam exposure). The incumbent may occasionally lift up to 50 lbs, and routinely stand for extended periods of time.
